Starting Again After Years Away From a Gym

The hardest part is walking through the door the first time, and the rest is a lot more forgiving than you think.

Starting Again After Years Away From a Gym

If it's been five years since you last trained, or fifteen, or you've never really been a gym person, you're far from alone. Life gets busy. Kids grow up, jobs change, a bad stretch of months turns into a bad stretch of years. Then one day you decide you want to feel stronger again, and the idea of walking into a gym brings up every nervous thought you've got.

Here's what members tell us again and again. Karrie Rugland wrote in her Google review, “By far the hardest part is walking through the door the first day.” Rachel wrote that she was “very nervous when I first joined, it had been a VERY long time since I had been to a gym,” and then added that everyone was “so welcoming and encouraging, whether it's your first day or 1000th day.”

What's really going on with the nerves

Most of the worry comes down to three questions. Will I look out of place? Will I be able to keep up? Will I hurt myself? All three are fair, and all three are the kind of thing a good coach should handle before you even ask.

A smaller class helps with the first two. When a group is around 15 people, you aren't hiding in a crowd, but you also aren't being watched by a crowd. You're one of a handful of people working on their own stuff. The third question is about coaching and pacing, which we'll get to.

Be honest about where you're starting

Your fitness today is your fitness today. It isn't what it was at 25 or even 35, and pretending otherwise is how people get hurt. The best first step is simply telling a coach the truth: how long it's been, what hurts, what you used to do and what you want to be able to do again.

That's exactly what Legacy's 15-minute coaching call is for. A coach talks with you about your situation, your goals and your plan. It isn't a sales script. It's the start of figuring out what a sensible first month looks like for you.

What a sensible comeback looks like

  • Start with two sessions a week. You can add a third once the first two feel routine.
  • Use lighter weights than you think you need and focus on moving smoothly.
  • Expect to be sore for the first couple of weeks, and don't let that talk you out of the second week.
  • Walk on your off days. It builds a base and helps you recover.
  • Tell your coach about anything that feels sharp, strange or scary, and check with your doctor if you have health concerns.

None of that is complicated. The tricky part is doing it on weeks when life gets in the way. That's where a group and a coach come in, because people notice when you aren't there.

Modifications are normal

One of the best things Rachel said in her review is about modifications. If an exercise is tough for you or an injury gets in the way, she says, “the trainers always have a modification (and they don't make you feel bad for asking).” That's how it should work. Everyone in the room is working at a level that fits them, and no one needs to apologize for it.

Legacy's FAQ is blunt on this point. It says the gym is beginner-friendly, 100%. Classes are made for all fitness levels, and coaches adjust each exercise to your ability. You'll see people of different ages, builds and starting points, all doing the same session with their own version.

Give it a few weeks before you judge

Your body responds faster than you might expect, but not overnight. Legacy's FAQ says most members notice more energy and strength within weeks, with changes in body composition arriving somewhere between 4 and 12 weeks. That means you'll probably feel better before you look different, and that's a good thing to know on week two when the mirror hasn't caught up.

It also helps to have people who are glad to see you. Kate Jerke, who owns Legacy with her husband Griffin, served eight years in the Army, including two deployments to Iraq, and she's NSCA certified. Griffin has spent his career building a gym that feels like a family. When a room is run by people like that, a comeback feels less like a test and more like a team.
